Kashmir Namda Large round rug: Fragrant bower. Size:66 x 66”

Kashmir has a historic connection with Persia and Central Asia, and a lot of its art bears these influences. These rugs are called Namda and are made of rough wool and felt. They are a typical feature of Kashmir, which has cold weather, used in every home to keep the warmth underfoot. The art of Namda came to India from Central Asia and stayed on. Kashmiri craftsmen later started their own embroidery on it, in rich designs and colours. Namda rugs are typically embroidered with a hook, in chainstitch, with floral and geometrical motifs. The wool used retains much of its natural oils and looks creamish/beige. This is not to be mistaken for dust - it is the natural colour of wool. In case of spills, spot cleaning with a carpet cleaner is easy to carry out.
